Implementing eLearning at a multi-campus university

Chapter Abstracts (entire directory)

Abstract

The use of information and communications technology (ICT) is, undoubtedly, playing an increasingly important role in teaching, learning and management of education in higher education settings around the globe. However, there are few examples available of how eLearning is being implemented as well as institutionalized at universities in developing countries.

At Aga Khan University (AKU), geographic spread of its campuses and the diversity of its students and faculty have prompted a need for eLearning to be implemented across the University. A group of faculty and staff members was charged with the task of initiating and implementing the change processes associated with eLearning. In the course of three years (2007-2009), many lessons have been learnt which are worth sharing with the wider academic and development community.

This chapter will present the case of AKU to develop a nuanced understanding of the processes of eLearning implementation at a multi-campus university. The authors will describe the step-by-step processes, and identify successes and challenges from the perspective of faculty and staff members charged with initiating and implementing the use of eLearning at the University. The chapter will conclude with a number of implications, as well as guidelines for other universities opting for campus-wide eLearning implementation.
